Disability Insurance

The course “Disability Insurance” provides a comprehensive and practical overview of disability insurance in Canada for financial planners and insurance advisors. Starting with the fundamentals of insurance and the definition of the term disability, we explore the real-world risk of income loss, the differences between group and individual coverage, and the key features of short-term and long-term disability policies. We cover the benefit periods and elimination periods, partial and residual disability benefits, common riders (such as Own Occupation definitions, COLA, and return of premium) as well as underwriting considerations that affect pricing, exclusions, and declines.

Building on this foundation, the course examines how disability insurance integrates with government programs (including EI sickness benefits, CPP/QPP disability, and provincial disability supports), employer-sponsored plans, and personal savings strategies. We also cover the taxation of benefits and more.
